Harbor History
The
Harrisville Harbor of Refuge was created in 1961, when the US Army
Corps of Engineers began the project. A large basin had to be
created along the shoreline by dynamiting, dredging and removing
huge boulders. After the basin was created, a large lime stone wall
was constructed around the basin to create a harbor of refuge for
anchorage and shelter. In 1963, a fixed dock was erected, providing
dockage, fueling facilities, and a primitive comfort station. In
1986, with the assistance of the Michigan Waterways Commission, the
current facilities of floating docks and a more modern comfort
station was developed.
Harrisville Harbor now provides a total of 97 slips, with 75 for
transient boaters, and 22 for seasonal boaters. All of our slips are
dredged, as required. Harrisville Harbor is probably the only Harbor
in the state which owns and operates it's own dredge. The Harbor
offers a well maintained grassy area with picnic tables, barbecue
stands, recreational space, dog walk, and a covered pavilion that
overlooks the Harbor. |
